From 16th to 18th of July, 2024, the 2nd Session of the Subcommittee on Livestock of the Committee on Agriculture of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) took place, where key trends and challenges in the global livestock sector were discussed.

The intergovernmental and scientific organizations participated in online meetings, including specialists of the All-Russian State Center for Animal Feed and Drug Standardization and Quality” (VGNKI, Rosselkhoznadzor), and representatives of the delegations from the countries of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Over the course of three days, the delegates examined a wide range of issues related to the main scope of FAO's work that included the sustainable transformation of the livestock sector, state of biodiversity for food production and agriculture, enhancement of productivity of small livestock farms, achievements in the application of adaptation methods to climate change and mitigation of its impacts, as well as optimization of feed rations and dissemination of best practices in ensuring animal health and welfare.

During the discussions, participants emphasized that sustainable transformation of the livestock sector can only be achieved by implementing best practices at every stage of the production and supply chains from production and processing to transportation and consumption. Additionally, they underscored the need to adapt efforts in this area in the light of scientific advancements and changes in external conditions, including ecological and socio-economic factors.

In the context of animal health protection and ensuring biosecurity at regional and international levels, the central focus of the discussions was on reviewing the results of implementing the "One Health" integrated approach and the practical application of the Joint Global System of FAO-WOAH-WHO of early warnings for threats to animal health.

Moreover, the agenda included the topic of rational use of land and water resources in the changing climate.

In conclusion, the session summarized the interim results of the implementation of the Long-Term Program of Work of the Subcommittee and provided recommendations aimed at further enhancing the cooperation among FAO member states in achieving the set objectives.
