STARTING IN 2024, 899 STUDIES ON FEED AND FEED ADDITIVES FOR THE PRESENCE OF GMO WERE CONDUCTED IN VGNKI

For the period from January 1st to April 30th of 2024, in the framework of fulfillment of the state’s assignment and monitoring of feed products for the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMO), the Russian State Centre for Animal Feed and Drug Standardization and Quality (VGNKI) conducted 899 studies of feed and feed additives for productive and non-productive animals.

The researches of the GMO control department performed a wide range of analyses aimed at determining the presence of GMO qualitatively and quantitatively by real-time PCR, of which:

  • 253 studies of feed and treats for cats, dogs and ornamental birds. The analysis of 9 domestic and 43 foreign feeds showed that 1 feed sample of Turkish production contained GM-components;
  • 389 studies of feed for livestock animals (cattle, swine, poultry and fur-bearing animals). The results of 49 domestic and 30 foreign feeds studies showed the absence of GM-components in them;
  • 58 studies were conducted for domestically produced grist. GM-components in an amount exceeding the permissible norm were detected in 1 sample;
  • 199 studies of feed additives for productive animal production of Russia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Vietnam, Germany, Denmark, India, Ireland, Italy, China, Korea, Malaysia, Slovenia, Finland, France, Croatia, and others showed the absence of GM-components in them.

Methods that are currently available in the field of accreditation of the VGNKI Testing Centre and those that continue to be developed by the Institution are universal and allow identification of GM-organisms of various types in any feed and feed additives for all types of animals. Furthermore, monitoring of international legislation and global dynamics of production of GMO products is used in the development and implementation of the new methods for determining both registered and unregistered GM lines.

It is worth noting, that VGNKI acts as a provider for laboratory qualification testing programs for determination of GMO in feeds for animals.
