FGBU "VGNKI" PARTICIPATED IN THE ROUND TABLE OF THE CIVIC CHAMBER OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION ON CONTROL IN THE SPHERE OF BEEKEEPING

On February 1st, 2023, the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation hosted a round table on the topic “Bees as an ecological indicator of the state of the environment and a guarantor of food security”. The event was organized by the Commission on Ecology and Environmental protection and the National Association for Genetic Safety.

The round table was attended by representatives of relevant ministries and departments, regional authorities, leading scientific institutions, enterprises of the agricultural sector, experts from non-profit organizations and practitioners in the field of beekeeping.

The meeting discussed the issues of reducing the negative impact of pesticides on pollinators, preserving, restoring and expanding bee habitats, combating insect diseases, as well as creating an integrated monitoring system for the state and number of populations.

Irina Nesterenko, head of the Department of pharmacological medicines, food and feed safety of the Russian State Center for Animal Feed and Drug Standardization and Quality (FGBU “VGNKI”), presented her report "State control of the quality and safety of honey in the Russian Federation".

The speaker touched upon the topics of state control in the field of beekeeping, treatment and prevention of bee diseases, presented statistics on the detection of residual amounts of antibacterial agents in honey in the Russian Federation and foreign countries, and also examined in detail the problems of uncontrolled use of antibacterial drugs in the treatment and issues related to methods for identifying the causes of mass death of bees.

Irina Nesterenko emphasized that there is a need for an increased attention to this topic as well as the improvement of legislative norms regarding the control of honey and methods for more accurate detection of falsification.

All the final notes, which were prepared at the end of the discussion, will be sent to the State Duma, the Federation Council, relevant departments and government bodies, scientific institutes and public organizations.
